The body is a temple – a gift that we have to maintain. It was given to us in perfect form. Unfortunately, we sometimes let life become an obstacle to keeping the temple in good condition. Work, family, church – none of these have to get in the way of your good health. Without it, everything else will suffer anyway. Shouldn’t your health be one of the items at the top of your to do list?

If you haven’t been putting yourself first, make that your resolution for 2009. Putting yourself first does not mean your family, your work or your church will get shortchanged. Better organization of your time is necessary for your life to work like a finely tuned instrument. Sit down the first or second week in January and create a vision of fitness. From that vision, plot a plan. How many days a week will you work out? When is the best time for you to work out at the gym or at home? If not a gym member, purchase a safe but inexpensive treadmill or elliptical for home. Consider working with a certified personal trainer. Most national training certifications can be verified online; take the time to check that you are spending your hard earned dollars with a knowledgeable and certified individual.

Make good nutrition part of your plan too! How can you get all five meals in daily as needed? Start a food log to keep track of when and what you are eating.

The changes do not have to occur all at once so don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to change your nutrition and exercise habits in one fell swoop. Take it one week at a time. Set yourself up for success by setting S.M.A.R.T. goals – specific, manageable, attainable, realistic and timely.

Do not forget there are professionals who can help you get started on your journey to good fitness. Besides the personal trainer, consider a registered dietician or certified nutritionist for meal planning. A certified Life Coach® can help you form a vision and put it into action if you get stuck at step one. The universe has made the tools available. It is up to you to use them.
